"India Commissions INS Jatayu, Second Naval Base IN Lakshadweep : A Milestone in Maritime Defense"




In a momentous event, the Indian Navy added a formidable asset  with the commissioning of second Naval base in Lakshadweep, INS Jatayu,  named after the mythical bird of Ramayana who tried to protect Sita ji, known for its vigilance and swiftness.

The Navys first base on the Laklshadweep islands, INS Dweeprakshak in Kavaratti, was commissioned in 2012.




Key Details:

- Commissioning Ceremony: Held at Naval Base Kochi on January 15, 2024, Admiral R Hari Kumar commissioned the second naval base in Lakshadweep at a function held in Minicoy.  It has been commissioned under the command of Commandant Vrat Baghel. Lakshadweep administrator Praful Patel, Southern Naval Command Chief Vice Admiral V Srinivas and Western Naval Command Chief Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh were present during the function.

- Location: Following its commissioning, INS Jatayu will be stationed at Minicoy Island, strategically positioned in the Lakshadweep archipelago. This location ensures rapid response capabilities to safeguard India's maritime interests in the Arabian Sea and beyond.




Significance Of INS Jatayu:

Since the Indian Ocean is witnessing an upsurge in maritime terror, crime , and piracy, this base is and added asset to monitor the maritime security. This base will act as the eyes and ears for India.

It is expected to provide crucial situational awareness to the Indian Navy.

This base will enhance the operational reach of the Indian Navy in the Indian Ocean, bolstering its capabilities for anti-piracy, anti-narcotics, and surveillance operations.

The base is situated in Minicoy Island, which sits at the intersection of crucial sea lines of communication (SLOCs), like Eight Degree channel (separates Minicoy Island from Maldives), and Nine Degree Channel (separates the island of Minicoy from Lakshadweep archipelago).



The commissioning of INS Jatayu marks a significant milestone in India's naval modernization journey, showcasing the nation's capabilities in indigenous shipbuilding and maritime security. Positioned at Minicoy Island, INS Jatayu stands ready to uphold India's maritime sovereignty and protect its interests in the vital Indian Ocean region.
